A Mum on a Mission — No Alcohol Needed
I am writing this on a plane having caught an early morning flight across the country to see my 23-year-old son.
I only booked the flight yesterday.
After completing the trifecta of moving out of home for the first time, moving cities and moving in with his girlfriend all in one go, after 6 months it has all fallen into a heap — no job and no girlfriend. A bank account with no money, an apartment lease still with 5 months to run and a head full of regret.
I hadn’t heard from him for over a week which was unusual. Texts and calls not returned. I knew something was up. Finally — finally — I got hold of him and it all came tumbling out.
“Do you need me to fly over and help you figure out what you want to do?”
“I don’t want to inconvenience you Mum.”
“You are never an inconvenience, and I want to help you however I can.”
“OK yes please, I’d love you to come.”
“All right, I’ll book the first flight in the morning and see you tomorrow afternoon.”
“Thank you Mum. Really, thank you. I love you.”
